Gain a deeper understanding of how the CELBAN exam is structured, including its design, challenges, and how internationally educated nurses (IENs) can overcome common bottlenecks.
Consolidate learning from previous sessions to develop sociolinguistic listening skills and strategies that can help you achieve a 10 in CELBAN listening.
Description
In this module, we will take a step back and review everything you’ve learned so far throughout the MasterMind series. Our goal is to integrate all the skills and concepts you've been working on to build a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to achieve a 10 in Listening on the CLB / CELBAN exam.
The CELBAN, based on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB), is designed to assess your ability to create and interpret English communications across a range of situations—non-demanding, moderately demanding, and demanding. To achieve a score of 9-12, you must demonstrate proficiency in interpreting and creating communications in highly demanding situations, something that many internationally educated nurses (IENs) struggle with.
This lesson will help you understand how the right brain plays a key role in developing the sociolinguistic listening skills necessary for success on the CLB / CELBAN. We’ll also review the specific skills that you need to focus on to overcome the listening challenges on the exam.
We’ll revisit key topics such as the intentional level of challenge built into the CLB / CELBAN exam, and discuss practical strategies for overcoming this challenge. Additionally, we will review the available resources at CELBANPrep University, which can further support your preparation, including CELBAN courses and other materials.
Key Topics Covered:
The CELBAN and the CLB: Understanding the connection between the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) and CELBAN, and the role of listening at different levels of proficiency (1-4, 5-8, 9-12).
The Challenge of Getting a 10 in Listening: An in-depth look at why a score of 10 in listening is often a bottleneck for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) and the specific skills required to overcome this challenge.
The Role of the Right Brain: Exploring the importance of developing the right brain to enhance your ability to process complex, real-time information in demanding situations. This is critical for achieving sociolinguistic listening and understanding the nuances of communication in healthcare contexts.
Overcoming Listening Challenges: Practical guidance on how to discern the skills necessary to get a 10 in listening, and how to fine-tune these skills through skill practice, application, and evaluation.
Skill Practice and Application: Techniques for practicing and applying your listening skills through various exercises and self-evaluations.
CELBANPrep University Resources: Review the CELBAN materials and courses offered through CELBANPrep University that can further support your preparation for the exam.
Review & Reflection:
As you reflect on what you learn, you will focus on integrating the following insights:
Your journey to mastering CELBAN listening: How far have you come in developing the skills to handle demanding listening tasks?
The importance of the right brain: How can you continue to strengthen your sociolinguistic listening abilities?
Your action plan for improvement: Based on this review, create a personal action plan for the next steps in your listening preparation.
By reviewing these key concepts and integrating the strategies we’ve discussed, you will strengthen your foundation and be better prepared for the challenges ahead. Remember, deep-level learning takes time, and by continuously challenging yourself, you’ll be ready to master the listening skills required to achieve a 9 or 10 on the CELBAN exam, and/or get the required score on the IELTS.
Course Goals
This course empowers you to:
Master active listening in demanding settings, understanding both spoken words and unspoken cues like body language, tone, and rhythm.
Enhance emotional regulation to improve focus and clarity during challenging conversations.
Interpret complex verbal and non-verbal cues accurately, helping you respond effectively to the needs of patients, colleagues, or clients.
By the end of the course, you'll be ready to contribute effectively to a team or program, applying the listening skills you’ve learned to improve communication, decision-making, and interpersonal interactions in your field.

She made every point clear that I tend to remember for a longer period. To be frank, I stuck on the intermediate English plateau for a long time. It was challenging that I stopped progressing as quickly as I did in the past. I felt no matter how much I study English, I didn’t get any better. However, I believe in myself now more than ever thanks to her lessons. More specifically, she has helped me in more ways than simply enriching my basic knowledge. She has also helped shaped me into the person I am today. Lastly, she taught me so much more than simply English. She taught me life lessons that I will carry in my heart forever.
I sincerely appreciate that she took the time to help me understand myself better and always being there for me. She saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. She has been there for me, cheering me on when I was on the right path and pulling me back on it when I went off-road.
She is the best teacher a student could ever ask for!” Kyoko Miura
